Cross-functional flowchart

A cross-functional flowchart, sometimes called a swimlane diagram, is a flowchart divided into parallel lanes where each lane represents a role, team or system responsible for the steps inside it.

When to use one

Reach for a cross-functional flowchart when four or more roles touch the same process and the interesting questions are about responsibility and hand-offs. Below that threshold, a workflow flowchart with the role prefixed to each step is usually clearer.

Structure

• Each lane is labelled with a role or team ("Support", "Engineering", "Finance").
• Steps live inside the lane of whoever performs them; arrows that cross lanes are hand-offs.
• Start and end shapes usually sit in the lane that owns the outcome.

Limits

Cross-functional charts get busy fast. Once a lane has fewer than two steps, absorb it into a neighbour; once the chart has more than six lanes, split it. Long horizontal charts are hard to read on a screen, so consider a vertical orientation if your tool supports it.
